I've just finished Silent Hill 4 and I'm interested in hearing everybody else's opinions on those who have played and/or completed it before.
Now this would be the fourth game in the series I've completed, having played Silent Hill, Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 3. Now I actually thought it was a really good game. It wasn't as good as the first three games in the series in my opinion, having noticably less story and writing with the characters, but the atmosphere and music was still brilliant. But that said, I still thought the story was good, just not as good as the original trilogy.
My main gripes were the gameplay deviations from the other games such as the 10 item limit and having to constantly go back to Room 302 in order to drop off supplies or sometimes in order to solve puzzles.
And while I like Henry, he just didn't have as much characterisation going for him as the previous protagonists. He seems to have almost an uninterested and bland voice despite finding himself in Freddy Kreuger-esque dreamscapes and facing unimaginable horrors and brutal murders.
Another thing I didn't like was the fact that the 2nd half of the game consisted of an escort mission. Silent Hill 2 originally did this, but it was a small segment in the game that didn't last long. But I will give credit to Eileen in that she can actually help out in combat, but honestly, I left her unequipped and did the fighting myself because I didn't want to get a bad ending or anything because of the chance of her getting hurt. But I still liked Eileen as well.
Other than that, it was a good game in my opinion and a good game in the series. Walter was an excellent villain, who had a very strong back-story with his 21 Sacrements ritual. He was only touched upon in the second game, and it's great to see that he has been expanded upon more. Another interesting thing I liked was that James' father makes an appearence, who was unmentioned in the 2nd game. It was great to see a brief mention of the events of the 2nd game, and left me wondering what truly happened to James. And I respect the game's boldness for trying to go in a newer direction. It had a good story and writing, not as good as the first three though. I got the Escape ending by the way.
And ith that I currently have Silent Hill Origins for the PS2 on order with Amazon, which will be the next game I play in the series and I look forward to it.
What was your opinion on Silent Hill 4?
