The Thinner is an item found in an elevator in the basement of the Lakeview Hotel in Silent Hill 2. It can be used to reveal a four-letter code on a photograph, scribbled out by a black marker, that serves as the solution to opening a briefcase in Room 202. The briefcase contains a music box.

The solution revealed on the photograph is random for each game, but usually has a negative connotation.
