The second boss of Silent Hill: Homecoming, Scarlet Fitch was the daughter of Doctor Martin Fitch of Shepherd's Glen who was sacrificed and dismembered to appease the gods.

The act of murdering his daughter took a heavy toll on Dr. Fitch, as evidenced by his uncertain behavior and self-mutilation. After being presented with one of Scarlet's dolls, Fitch's scars open and he begins bleeding profusely, and Scarlet's doll rises from the bloody pool and mutates into a tall doll-like monster. Fitch addresses the monster directly as "Scarlet" and begs for her forgiveness. In response, the Scarlet monster bites Fitch's head off and tosses his body aside. She is then promptly defeated by Alex Shepherd, who then sinks into the pool of blood and returns to the foggy world.

Appearence

Scarlet's monstrous form is well over 12 feet tall, and extremely thin as well. She has segmented armor that looks like a porcelain doll, which can be broken away to reveal a thin fleshy core. The head of the doll is shattered and broken, showing it to be hollow, with the fracture along the mouth acting to increase her bite radius. Her mouth is filled with needle-like teeth as well. She is prone to letting out snake-like hisses and shrieks.

Character

Scarlet attacks by swinging her long arms, which are tipped with clawed hands. She also attacks Alex by slamming her fists into the ground and causing a shockwave. All of her attacks are fairly avoidable, however it takes a good deal of practice. In order to damage her, the porcelain shell of her body must be destroyed, a job perfect for the fire axe or crowbar. Once the flesh of her legs is exposed, Alex can cause her to topple and kneel, stunned, until he can break all of her armor.

She then enters a second phase, in which she crawls on all fours like an insect. Due to the breaking of her armor, she is vulnerable to all weapons. She attacks much more quickly and can climb the walls and ceiling to drop down on Alex. Once she takes enough damage in this form, she finally dies and dissolves into a pool of blood. Gives the achievement 'blood donor'.

Symbolism

The monstrous form of Scarlet is just that, Scarlet Fitch reincarnated from her father's horrible guilt. Her form is based off of her love of dolls, which fill her room and can be found strewn along the path to Fitch's location. When she first arrives, she cradles her father before killing him quickly, suggesting that she may still have some compassion for him. Her rapidly beating heart, visible only after her back's ceramic layer is peeled off, is quite possibly a representation of the sheer trauma she experienced at the moment of her death.

Fitch sacrificed Scarlet by dismembering her, and her doll form shows this with the disjointed form of her joints. Additionally, the lines along the monster's breasts indicate a kind of sexuality about their murder, that Fitch cut off his daughter's breasts as he murdered her. The absence of Scarlet's mother implies that perhaps Fitch, like some fathers whose wives have died, imposed his view of his wife on his daughter, adding to his shame.

Though, after defeating her the first time, she revives and crawls around like an insect, up walls and on all fours. The reason for this is probably to take on Alex's guilt of his brother Josh's death or Josh's love for spiders.

Trivia

  • In Silent Hill 3, one of the dolls found in Alessa Gillespie's room is named Scarlet.
  • Scarlet is one of the two bosses in the game (the other being Sepulcher) that killed their parent. Ironically, the two bosses were brought up with a 'perfect childhood' by the parents who gave them everything they wanted. This is a possible symbolism of excessive love spoiling the children.
