Red Square is a reccuring symbolic object that appears in several Silent Hill games. It is not clearly known what significance it has.

Silent Hill 2

Red square

The save point texture.

In Silent Hill 2, Red Square appears as the Save Points and may symbolize Mary's letter. It appears as a red shiny sheet of crumpled paper. It shines like it was dipped in water or blood and then after paper became sticky attached to walls and other vertical surfaces where it often can be seen.

Unlike in the first game it seems that protagonist James Sunderland doesn't have to physicaly contact the save point to activate it as it is firstly seen in the well far from James's reach.

Red Squares can also be seen attached to the faces of Bubble Head Nurses in Brookhaven Hospital.

In the labyrinth the faces of the criminals are also covered with sheets on which the names of their crimes are written.

Silent Hill 3

Rough Square

Red Square in the otherworld Hilltop Center

In Silent Hill 3, red squares appear in the Otherworld. Four red squares apperar in Hilltop Center above the hanging body in the room where shift to the otherworld occured and later in the upper part of the cage construction behind the Gallery of Fine Arts. They appear to be made of textile this time. Square sheets with the images of ears and screaming mouths also appear there.

Square sheets also attached to the back side of most of wheelchairs that Heather encounters in the otherworld.

Silent Hill 4: The Room

Love letter

The red letter.

In the fourth game, Henry Townshend recieves red letters that are sent him by Joseph Schreiber. Their text can't be read in Walter's Otherworlds so they appear there as blank sheets of red paper.

Also the protagonist uses the red notebook as the save point.
