Sam Bartlett served as Mayor of Shepherd's Glen during the events of Silent Hill: Homecoming. His great-great grandfather was a founding member of the town. It's said that, when running for mayor, Sam did so unopposed.
Character
Shown to be an eccentric drunk and rather aloof, Mayor Bartlett was the father of Joey Bartlett, a friend of Alex Shepherd's brother, Joshua.
The Mayor is first witnessed as a figure in Rose Heights Cemetery, simply digging up old graves. It isn't until Alex's first, true journey into the horror-town of Silent Hill, that Mayor Bartlett is actually interacted with.
It's within the Otherworld's version of the Grand Hotel's Atrium (Bartlett's Otherworld) that Alex confronts Sam, asking about the location of his brother. Not receiving an answer to his liking, Alex presented Mayor Bartlett with a watch (found in the Bartlett Mausoleum), asking him about his son, Joey. He and Joshua were friends, according to Alex, and the two may be together. Tossing the watch to the ground, Bartlett unwittingly releases the monster Sepulcher, a demonic manifestation of Joey Bartlett. Sam Bartlett is killed by this creature. while begging for protection.
Truth
Through the course of events' it's revealed that Bartlett buried his son alive as part of the Pact. This decree, placed upon the founding families of Silent Hill by The Order's demonic God, was meant to protect Shepherd's Glen from the corrupting influence that hold's sway over the neighboring town of Silent Hill. The Bartlett family was ordered to offer their sacrifice to the Earth, hence their children are buried alive.
Trivia
- Bartlett was one of the first characters, apart from Alex Shepherd, to be revealed before the game's release.
- The Bartlett family owns a winery.
- In Elle Holloway's diary, Elle went out jogging one morning, eventually coming upon Mayor Bartlett. He was laying passed out, drunk, on the front lawn of his mansion. He was alive, yet unresponsive as Elle poked him with a stick.
- During his time in the Grand Hotel, Alex finds a series of notes that contain information on an affair involving a woman named Carol (the woman for whom Alex retrieves the 'lost memories' of) and 'Sam'. According to these same letters, Sam loved to work in the Atrium Garden, and that Carol and her sickly husband, Clayton, would visit the garden often. Among the collection is a specific note stating that someone witnessed Sam struggling with an unusually large sack while entering the Atrium. There was contemplation of police involvement, but nothing came of it.
- It's thought that Bartlett's act of grave digging is a way to cope with the act of murdering his son.
