Silent Hill
A small town in the United States, its location remains unknown (in the film its placed in West Virginia). It was founded in the late 18th or early 19th Century by a group of settlers, making it a penal colony. The most noticeable group in Silent Hill is a corrupted version of Gnostic Christianity known simply as The Order. This cult has been divided into three different sects (although still connected): the Valtiel sect, the Holy Mother sect and the Holy Woman sect.
Paleville
Identified in Silent Hill 2 as being the northern half of the town, the counterpart to South Vale. It contains the districts of Old Silent Hill, Central Silent Hill, and the Resort Area.
Old Silent Hill
Primarily residential area, usually ignored by people on vacation.
Balkan Church – A legitimate church, possibly Protestant, in Old Silent Hill, located in the corner of Bloch and Bachman. Virtually ignored by members of The Order. Henry Townshend has a photograph of the church in his bedroom.
Cafe 5to2 - A small diner located on the North side of town over Bachman street. Harry wakes up here and meets Cybil in the beginning of the game.
Midwich Elementary School - A school located on the southwestern side of town over Midwich street. Both Lisa Garland and Alessa Gillespie were students there.
Sewers Connecting to Resort Area - A sewer system of large tunnels that can be accessed from the Waterworks building next to Midwich Elementary. This section connects to the Resort Area.
Central Silent Hill
Business district made primarily for the use of tourists, located to the East of Old Silent Hill.
Alchemilla Hospital – A hospital run by Dr. Kauffman located in Central Silent Hill in the corner of Crichton and Koontz. The hospital serves as a front for the production and distribution of White Claudia. Alessa was once a patient there.
Andy's Books - Bookstore located over Koontz street, in front of Alchemilla Hospital. Featured in Origins.
Artaud Theater - A haunty theater found in the western edge of Koontz street. Another important place for Travis Grady in Origins. Presumably could be the same theater featured in the film, although it was said that the theater in the movie was just right next to the Grand Hotel, accessed by the 111 room.
Butcher's shop - Butcher shop located in the corner of Low st. and Toluca ave. Grady passed through there in his way to the Cedar Grove Sanitarium.
Cedar Grove Sanitarium - The second mental institution of Silent Hill, found over Acadia rd. Travis's mother was instituted in there.
Green Lion Antiques/"Other Church" - Dahlia's business/base of operations for The Order, located in the farther northeastern corner of the map over Simmons street.
Greenfield Apartments - An apartment complex situated in the far north of Acadia rd.
Lumberyard - A lumberyard found over Midway Ave. Featured in Origins.
Nathan Drugs - The local drug store seen in Silent Hill 1 and the film.
Riverside Motel - One of the many motels in the touristic area of Silent Hill located over Riverside Dr. A place full of memories for Travis Grady.
Silent Hill Police Station – The headquarters of the Silent Hill police force and their (ineffective) war on Order-related drug trafficking, located in the corner of Crichton and Sagan.
Silent Hill Town Center – A shopping mall located in the northeastern section of Central Silent Hill over Simmons street. Dahlia Gillespie’s antique store (and secret chapel) is next door to the mall.
Central Silent Hill as of Homecoming
By the time of Silent Hill: Homecoming, Central Silent Hill has a somewhat different layout than in the other games, primarily for aesthetic or gameplay purposes.:
Church of the Holy Way - The Church of the Holy Way is the main church in Silent Hill, and is ruled over by the Order.
Dargento Cemetery - Dargento Cemetery is an old cemetery within Silent Hill, located across the street from Overlook Penitentiary. It is known for its statue of Janus. In recent times, Smogs have begun to move into the location, although no other monster seemed particularly interested in the small location.
Grand Hotel - Presumably located in central Silent Hill, this hotel was featured first in the film then introduced in Homecoming.
Overlook Penitentiary - The town's main prison, its cell walls have been covered with graffiti from years of harboring inmates. At some point in the past, Alex Shepherd's father, Adam, was brought here with several deputies to cull a riot, only to remain there for six days before returning. Adam never once spoke about the ordeal afterwards. Once one of the many safe zones for members of the Order, it has become overrun with monsters in recent times, which have slaughtered most of those within. The Otherworld variation of this location has an underground tunnel system that leads directly to an execution chamber, which has a window with a pathway on the other side that leads to the Church
The Lair - The Lair is located beneath the Church of the Holy Way and within an old mine. It is likely the reason why Order members wear mining suits to protect themselves. The Lair is used to torture and kill those who do not see eye-to-eye with the Order itself, and is also the location used for ritualistic sacrifice by some. Several vats are filled to the brim with blood, but for no known reason. At least three major characters have been known to have been brought here - Alex Shepherd, Elle Holloway, and Deputy Wheeler. At least one Pyramid Head appears to have originated from within the Lair on its way to execute someone, as well.
The Toluca Lake Offices - A badly dilapidated structure which is beginning to be reclaimed by nature. One former survivor was sliced in half here, likely due to being trapped in a room where half the wall was broken open and the only two doors were barricaded, with one being locked and the other being boarded up. It has a hallway that leads directly into Toluca Lake Water & Power's basement.
Toluca Lake Water and Power - An incredible noisy place, Toluca Lake W&P is the supplier of energy to most of Central Silent Hill. It should be noted, however, that streetlights operate as normal past the barricade set up on Sagan Street after Alex has shut down the generators in the W&P building. Where that area of Central Silent Hill receives its electricity from is unknown.
Boiler Room - This building is located on Koontz Street, just across from Water and Power. As its name implies, it contains boilers, four of them. Though it's purpose is not specified, given the proximity of the Boiler Room to Water and Power it seems likely that this is where water is converted to steam for use in their power generators.
Resort Area
The tourist destination on the north side of Toluca Lake, also known as Resort Silent Hill.
Annie's Bar - A resort bar found in the corner of Bachman and Craig. Harry Mason has his second encounter with Michael Kauffman here.
Indian Runner - The delivery service of Silent Hill located over Weaver street, the owner used to stash White Claudia drugs under the threat of The Order and presumably Michael Kauffman.
Lakeside Amusement Park – A theme park overlooking the lake, situated over West Sanford street. A common destination for Harry and Heather, it contains several attractions like a Merry-go-round, a roller coaster, a haunted house and a divination tent.
Lakeview Hotel - One of the most important hotels of the resort area of Silent Hill, its location is over West Sandford street and is pretty close to the Lakeside Amusement Park. It was consumed by a big fire and appeared as the final location to James Sunderland's quest.
Norman Motel – A motel on the north shore of Toluca Lake situated in the corner of Sanford and Weaver. A place where Kauffman stashed the remaining Aglaophotis.
The Lighthouse – The lighthouse on Toluca Lake, one of the town’s oldest structures.
Sewers Connecting to Amusement Park - A sewer system of large tunnels. They can be reached from Sandford St. and connect to the Lakeside Amusement Park.
South Vale
The south side of Silent Hill, also known as South Silent Hill.
Baldwin Mansion - A mansion, home to Ernest and Amy Baldwin, only explored in Maria's scenario.
Blue Creek Apartments – A small apartment building. Angela's mother may have lived there.
Brookhaven Hospital – A mental institution in South Vale located on Carroll street. Originally founded around 1810 as a Civil War field hospital, it is presumably key to the foundation of Silent Hill. A common ground for many characters of the saga, it has been visited by Heather, James, Maria and by Eric and Tina in the spinoff Arcade game.
Heaven's Night – A gentleman’s club enjoying moderate fame in South Vale located over Carroll street. It is hinted that Maria works here, and Silent Hill 3 references the 'return of Lady Maria' to the stage.
Jack's Inn – A small motel located just South of Rosewater park over Nathan and Munson. Douglas and Heather rest in a room here before they split up. James finds a save point on a car here, but nothing else.
Observation Deck – A scenic overlook along County Road 73 adjacent to a wooded hiking path. Here is where James Sunderland begins his search for his late wife Mary.
Pete's Bowl-O-Rama - Another entertainment spot of South Vale found in the corner of Nathan and Carroll. Visited by James, Eddie Dombrowski and Laura. Heather also passes by here in Silent Hill 3.
Rosewater Park – A park on the south shore of Toluca Lake situated over Nathan st. Contains a memorial to the people lost in the 1918 disappearance of the Little Baroness. James and Mary visited here on their vacation. He also meets Maria here.
Silent Hill Historical Society – A historical museum on the edge of South Vale, placed in Nathan street. This seems to lead to the remains of the Toluca Prison.
Toluca Prison – A now-defunct prison originally used to house Civil War POWs. Exact location is not stated in the games, however it appears to be located beneath the Historical Society building. Possibly the building was built over the site of the unused prison. Though this may just be caused by James' delusions, it is highly likely based on where James exits the Labyrinth that connects to it.
Woodside Apartments – An apartment complex built just next to the Blue Creek Apartments found over Katz st.
Toluca Lake
The lake, surrounded by forests, upon which the town of Silent Hill was founded, Shepherd's Glen seems to be also located around it. Once a swamp, this lake swallowed the Little Baroness boat and Alex Shepherd's brother was drowned in here.
Water Prison (A.K.A. Cylinder Prison or Panopticon) – A jail used by The Order to punish and brainwash the children living in the Wish House. While a stay there was used as a form of punishment, most of the children's stays were scheduled. Most likely situated within a mile or two of Wish House. One former employee, Andrew DeSalvo, was brought here around the same time as Henry Townshend was, where Henry would soon find DeSalvo to be Victim 18/21. The children brought here appeared to live in fear and pain, as revealed through the many graffiti marks scrawled in several cells. It appeared that few children survived this location (with the only known survivor being Walter Sullivan), and the location had an ingenious set of holes to secretly dispose of any corpses. However it is believed that the "moving rooms" and disposing system maybe an exaggeration. They may not have actually existed, except in "His World." (His referring to Walter.)
Woods of Silent Hill
The woods that surround the town of Silent Hill.
Wish House (A.K.A. Hope House) – A secluded, Order-run orphanage in the woods outside of Silent Hill. It was here that Walter Sullivan was taken in after his mother abandoned him in South Ashfield Height's Room 302. The building itself has become dilapidated due to years of abandonment, and appears to be condemned. However, Henry Townshend and Jasper Gein find a way into the locked structure, only to split up to search the building. Unfortunately, Jasper comes across Walter alone, and gladly excepts his fate of immolation, marking his own chest with 17121 (Victim 17/21) with a sharp candlestick and exclaiming that he saw the Red Devil.
Wiltse Coal Mine
A coal mine that once operated out of the Toluca Lake area, it has long since closed.
Other towns
Heather's town
- (nameless)
The town to which Harry and Heather moved in after fleeing Portland. At least a few hours' drive from Silent Hill, possibly farther; Douglas states that it would be too far to walk. Harry and Heather live here for twelve years prior to the events in Silent Hill 3.
Central Square Shopping Center – A sleek, modern shopping center. It has three floors, five department stores and a Happy Burger.
Daisy Villa Apartments – Harry and Heather’s home on Bergen Street.
Hazel Street Station – A subway station underneath the Central Square Shopping Center.
Hilltop Center – An office building half a block down the street from Daisy Villa Apartments.
Ashfield
A busy town half a day’s drive from Silent Hill.
Hotel South Ashfield – The building across the street from South Ashfield Heights, and the location of Richard Braintree's untimely demise as Victim 19/21. This area also leads into a shopping district, including an abandoned pet store (where Steve Garland - Victim 4/21 - was murdered) and Bar Ashfield, a tavern where Victim 10/21, Eric Walsh, worked as a bartender. The location is littered with useful objects for those looking to survive Walter's nightmares.
South Ashfield Heights – An apartment building. It is home to Henry Townshend and Eileen Galvin and the birthplace of Walter Sullivan. Frank Sunderland and Rachel also live here, characters connected to Silent Hill 2.
- Room 302 - Henry's apartment room.
South Ashfield Station – A subway station which presumably connects (either directly or indirectly) to Silent Hill. It was the first location where Henry Townshend was ever brought to through the portal in his bathroom in Room 302, where he met the doomed Cynthia Velasquez (Victim 16/21). Walter Sullivan was known to travel to South Ashfield through this location.
St. Jerome's Hospital - The hospital Walter Sullivan was brought to after his parents abandoned him in Room 302 of South Ashfield Heights, and is later where Eileen Galvin is taken after Sullivan's failed attempt on her life. It is while exploring this location that Henry Townshend realizes only he can see and utilize the strange portals that lead to his room.
Shepherd's Glen
A small town situated down-lake from neighboring Silent Hill, founded just over a hundred and fifty years ago by the Shepherd, Holloway, Bartlett and Fitch families.
Toluca River - A usually calm water feature running through the western edge of Shepherd's Glen. Alex Shepherd was rescued from the river when he was eight years old.
Bartlett Winery - Situated on the western end of town, this small vineyard and winery has been owned by the Bartlett family for years. It can't be reached, as the bridge leading to it has been destroyed.
Dr. Fitch's Office - A clinic and office complex run by Martin Fitch. It seems to be the only operating health facility in Shepherd's Glen. Through the course of his journey, Alex makes his way here, learning about the fate of Scarlet and Doc Fitch's hand in the current state of events.
Rose Heights Cemetery - A large cemetery near the center of town, it's filled with hundreds of graves spanning the town's history.
Salvage Yard - Located to the south of town, the Salvage Yard is owned and operated by mechanic Curtis Ackers. Shortly after arriving home, Alex comes here in search of answers to the town's condition. It's here that the MK. 23 can be procured and the enemy Smog is encountered for the first time.
Shepherd's Glen Police Station - Standing across from Rose Heights Cemetery, it was here that Alex found himself shortly after his first foray into Silent Hill. Located in front of the Police Department stands a billboard, where Elle Holloway spends her days posting up fliers of missing persons.
Shepherd's Glen Town Hall - The town hall is located on the eastern edge of town. It's one of the few areas to relatively escape the effects of the disaster that struck the small burg in Alex Shepherd's four year absence. It houses the offices of both Mayor Bartlett and Judge Holloway. While seemingly small during Alex's first visit, A large ritual chamber and a sprawling tunnel complex lay beneath it.
Shepherd House - The Home of the Shepherd Family. Here, Alex learns from his mother that Adam has gone missing. Given the importance of the Shepherd's, this may be a type of ancestral home.
Sewers of Shepherd's Glen - The sewage system constructed to service the waste-management needs of Shepherd's Glen, the tunnels are full of garbage.
Brahms
A town neighboring Silent Hill. Cybil Bennett lives and works there. It is featured in the movie, but only mentioned in the games. In the movie, it is spelled "Brahams."
Pleasant River
A town that seems located southeast of Silent Hill. Walter Sullivan made his studies in the university of Pleasant River along with Bobby Randolph, Sein Martin and Jasper Gein. (Not featured in the games)
Portland
The town where Harry Mason lives after the events in the original Silent Hill. Harry and Heather live here until they are found and attacked by a cult member. They then move to a nameless town which serves as the setting for the first half of Silent Hill 3.
