- This article is a guide for a Silent Hill puzzle.
In Silent Hill, near the end of the game, Harry Mason encounters a puzzle referred to as The Grim Reaper's List. It is found in Nowhere, following the door marked by the symbol for "Ophiel". The puzzle involves a set of names that must be used to input a word into a keypad of letters.
Clue[]
The object of the puzzle is to enter a word in a keypad in order to unlock the doorway. The clues to finding the solution are found on nearby slates on the wall. There are two slates; one is an explanation in the form of a poem:
"Names engraved on a lithograph.
The Grim Reaper's list.
Yes, the headcount is set
Young and old lined up
In order of age.
Then, the pathway opens
Awaiting them, the frenzied
Uproar, the feast of death!"
The other slate contains a set of names that will be used to discern the key word:
"35 Lydia Findly
60 Trevor F. White
18 Albert Lords
45 Roberta T. Morgan
38 Edward C. Briggs"
Solution[]
The poem states that the list should be "in order of age". The numbers preceding the names on the list correspond to the person's age. After reordering the list in terms of youngest to oldest, a new list emerges:
- Albert Lords
- Lydia Findly
- Edward C. Briggs
- Roberta T. Morgan
- Trevor F. White
Since the keypad is composed of letters, Harry must find an arrangement of letters formed by the names. In the reordered list, the first letter of all the names, when read vertically, form the word "ALERT". Enter the word "alert" on the keypad, and the door opens.
